Microbiology of Anaerobic Sludges in the Paper Industry

Prevention of pellet floating and pellet degradation in anaerobic plants: analysis of anaerobic sludges with the help of modern gene probe technology.

Abstract

In the course of current plant inspections, a total of 14 anaerobic reactors located in industrial wastewater treatment plants from the paper sector were examined. The anaerobic reactors examined were based on UASB and EGSB reactor technologies. For characterization of the anaerobic sludges, chemical-physical measurement techniques were employed and microbiological analyses were performed. The analysis of anaerobic sludge populations was performed with the help of VIT® gene probe technology. The results obtained provide information about the conditions necessary for a satisfactory formation of pellets. A decrease of hydrolysis- and acidification bacteria can be considered to be a significant indicator of a changed pellet stability.
