1) Latest news: VIT-Microthrix: simplified procedure

Microthrix parvicella is the main producer of floating sludge and foam particularly at municipal wastewater treatment plants. Just at the season's change from fall to winter an increasing growth of the filament appears. To avoid settling problems in wastewater purifaction, based on the unnoticed growth of Microthrix a systematic and continuous monitoring of Microthrix filaments has been proven. Hereby, vermicon AG's detection system VIT-Microthrix was established as controlling- and early warning system in wastewater industry. The test is easy to apply and the filamentous bacteria can be detected even in dense sludge flocs reliably and highly-specifically. Moreover, a semi-quantification and thus a rapid estimation of the situation at the plant is possible very easily. The detection procedure, which is quite simple, now was optimized again and thus considerably shortened.

2) Top topic: ScanVIT-Legionella in current study

A current, independent study by several internationally renowned institutes (published in „Letters in Applied Microbiology 51 (2010)“)* compares the standard method of cultivation (ISO 11731) with vermicon AG's rapid test ScanVIT-Legionella. The results are clear: ScanVIT-Legionella actually outreaches the reference method in terms of comparability and rapidity. Additionally, compared to other modern methods, the clear advantage of ScanVIT-Legionella is, that only living cells are detected. In summary vermicon AG's rapid test is exposed as the suitable alternative for the detection of Legionella in water samples.

3) Product of the month: VIT-Tepidimonas – from research to applied knowledge

Up to now, biofilm formation in paper mills could only be treated reactively and semi-preventively. Due to the almost complete absence of specific microbiological early warning systems detection during the formation process was nearly impossible so far. In line with the EU-research project AquaFit4Use – for the sustainable use of ready to use water in chemistry-, paper-, food- and textile industry – first results in early detection of biofilms were obtained which can be used in practice. Analysis of water samples from paper mills with newly developed gene probes showed that biofilm formation depends on the pH-value. In paper mills with alkaline to neutral process conditions the bacteria Tepidimonas and Cloacibacterium act as early indicators and are responsible for early biofilm formation. Now, the transfer of the gene probes into easy-to-use rapid test kits enables the continuous monitoring of the bacteria which are responsible for early biofilm formation in water circles and process samples of paper mills with alkaline to neutral process conditions. The efficiency of measures for the combat of biofilms can be controlled and the production process can be optimized correspondingly.

4) Microbiology news: New insights - VIT-gallery

The detection of microorganisms using the VIT® gene probe technology enables in addition to the rapid and specific identification the visualisation of cells directly in the sample material. Thus, completely new insights become possible. We show you in our picture gallery how bacteria look, which are visualised specifically with our VIT gene probe technology directly at the site of their action. Have a look into the world of microorganisms, directly in different sample material and get new insights!
