Probiotics

Highly specific detection and quantification of probiotic bacteria with VIT®.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are additives or drugs which contain probiotic bacteria in high doses. Probiotic bacteria have been attributed with specific health-promoting effects. They are, for example, supposed to stabilize the intestinal flora and to have a strengthening effect on the immune system. The intestinal microflora consists of up to 100 billions of bacteria. As a result of the particular conditions in the intestinal tract, anaerobic genera dominate the microbial populations. The intestinal flora is one of the most important bacterial reservoirs in the human body.

Due to the large number of other bacteria, it is essential for any incoming probiotic bacteria to be able to survive gastric acid with a minimum of damage, in order to still have the numbers and the potential to prevail in the face of the other populations in the intestine and take effect.

For this reason, probiotic products have to be examined regularly regarding the numbers and activity of the applied living bacteria.

Probiotics in production

Producing probiotics gives rise to numerous challenges for the manufacturer. First, it must be ensured that a minimum amount of probiotic bacteria is present in the product, in order for it to be able to sufficiently produce an effect in the intestine. Second, it is necessary to monitor the purity of the probiotic bacteria, lest a contamination by other bacteria occurs. This could put the product or, in the worst case, the consumer at risk. Third, the bacteria have to live and have to attain a minimum level of activity in order to prevail over the other microbial populations.
Only if all of these requirements are met, the finished probiotic product will have a substantial impact on the intestinal flora.

VIT® for quality control

With VIT®, the production process in the manufacturing of probiotics can be monitored continuously and can thus be controlled in a targeted manner. By direct detection of probiotic bacteria in the product, undesirable developments can be recognized immediately. As even the tiniest amounts of contaminations can be detected, the safety of the produced batch is checked efficiently. Reject batches are prevented. Moreover, via direct microbiology, the levels of viable probiotic bacteria are determined independently of cultivation.

Detection of probiotics directly in the sample with VIT®

VIT® allows to detect the probiotic bacteria directly in the sample without cultivation. Lactobacillus delbrueckii shines red, while Lactobacillus casei cells are green. With this method the probiotic bacteria can be identified and quantified.

GMP certification

vermicon AG's GMP certification allows the pharmaceutical industry to also make use of our services as this certificate guarantees compliance with legal regulations. VIT® is based on the FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) technology, which has been undisputedly and successfully applied for fast and specific detection of bacteria in scientific research. The natural kinship of microorganisms is made use of for this method and guarantees its extremely high specificity. The GMP certificate provides our clients not only with the certainty that the method is applied by a company which, being a direct spin-off of this technology‘s inventors, is the No.1 in the field of FISH technology, but also ensures that all legal regulations are fully complied with.
